Warm And Hot Weather Clothing

Temperate Climates

For climates slightly warmer than the UK, garments that are loose fitting and 100% synthetic (polyester or nylon) are ideal. They dry quickly and need no ironing. However in higher temperatures they can make the wearer feel hot and uncomfortable.

Hot Arid Conditions

When travelling in extremely high temperatures many experienced adventurers prefer to use natural fibres like pure cotton and linen or merino wool for ultimate comfort.

Hot Humid Conditions

Pure cottons have a tendency to rot in wet conditions therefore mixed fabrics like polycotton are a good compromise.

Features To Look Out For

Shirts

  • High collar to protect back of neck
  • Long sleeves which can be rolled up
  • Chest pockets when travelling
  • Venting to the body

Trousers

  • Plenty of pockets including at least one zipped
  • Zip off legs turns the trouser into a short
  • Loose fit for activity and ventilation
  • Reinforced in seat and knees if spending time in dense undergrowth
  • Able to secure around top of boot to stop insects

Fabrics

  • Look out for those that have high sun protection factors (UPF above 30)
  • Some fabrics can now have mosquito repellent permanatley impregnated

Other Equipment

Footwear

  • When either hot or very wet conditions are encountered it is best to choose a boot without a waterproof membrane. The membrane can prevent water from escaping.
  • Also your feet will feel much hotter in a boot with a membrane.
  • Fine merino socks are preferable to cotton blends which will keep the foot damp

Sandals

  • In many conditions a pair of sport type sandals can be a useful addition to your boots
  • They can be made from leather or fabric tape
  • Ensure a good arch support and firm foot bed

Headwear

  • A wide-brimmed hat which can shade the back of your neck and face
  • Some hats incorporate roll down fabric to further protect the neck
  • Vents to the side of the hat will help to keep you cool.
  • As with clothing hats made of natural fibres are usually cooler than synthetics.

Landmark Tips

Take a mixture of both synthetic and natural fibres on your trip and you will have maximum versatility.

Don’t spray deet-based insect repellent on synthetic fabrics because it eats the yarn and you might loose the shirt off your back.
